As women age, they may be looking for ways to keep their brain as sharp and healthy as possible.
New research suggests that the answer may be just outside the front door: physical activity. A study published in the journal Neurobiology of Aging found that physical fitness benefits brain function.
The Canadian study, conducted among older women, found that exercise increased blood flow to the brain, which in turn improved cognition.

The mental aspect of losing and maintaining weight is often overlooked. I think that a major reason people regain lost weight is because they never changed their attitude about food and exercise. They just changed their diet temporarily and eventually went back to their old habits.

With July being Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month, it is a great time to celebrate the ways science is trying to help arthritis sufferers by thinking outside the Western medicine box…or bottle. It seems that the pain from this autoimmune disease can be helped by the ease of movement and concentration that a patient can receive from none other than the art of Tai Chi.
Although the name may sound a lot like “Chai tea,” don’t be confused, I assure you these two items only share the common bond of a long and healthy tradition: Tai Chi in China and Chai tea in India. Millions of older women suffer the pain and stiffness of arthritis, especially in their knee joints, which can severely curtail everyday activities like climbing stairs or getting out of a car. It turns out there may be a way to protect our knees and avoid the discomforts of aging: strong thigh muscles.
That’s according to a University of Iowa study published this week, which found that women who had the strongest thigh muscles were about 50 percent less likely to develop knee pain compared with those with the weakest muscles. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has released new recommendations of physical activity necessary to promote health benefits. With the new guidelines nobody is exempt, not kids, older adults, or adults with disabilities. Previous recommendations were for healthy adults to have 30 minutes daily of moderate activity.
It is now recommended that adults should do at least 2.5 hours a week of moderately intense physical activity such as brisk walking, or 1 hour and 15 minutes of vigorously intense jogging, swimming laps or other aerobic activities. A combination of the two types of exercise many bring about the same results, but the exercise must be in sessions that are at least 10 minutes long to raise the heart beat enough to provide benefits.
