Allopurinol has been available for the last 40 years to treat gout
A drug commonly used to treat gout can also relieve angina, researchers say.
Allopurinol is inexpensive compared with some other angina drugs and appears to work by reducing the energy needs of the heart, the Lancet reports.

THE UK’s first national sleep survey has found that Aberdeen is bottom of the league when it comes to getting a good night’s rest.
The Great British Sleep Survey, conducted by Professor Colin Espie, director of the University of Glasgow Sleep Centre, found the average sleep satisfaction score for Aberdonians was only 62 per cent. Read the rest of this entry »

Children from urban areas whose mothers suffer from depression during pregnancy are more likely than others to show antisocial behavior, including violent behavior, later in life.

A study in 1957 showed that animals lose weight at high altitudes, and weight loss has long been known for people at high altitudes, but the subjects were all extremely fit and active mountaineers and skiers.
Obese and overweight people tend to suffer altitude sickness and resultant nausea, dizziness and heart attacks, when at very high altitudes, so the research team from the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich decided to find out what would happen if overweight people spent some time at a moderately high altitude of 8,700 feet. While nutritional supplements such as glucosamine and omega-3 fatty acids can help alleviate pain, researchers are now saying that breathing techniques may help ease various discomforts.
Researchers from the Department of Psychology at Arizona State University found that chronic pain sufferers, also known as fibromyalgia patients, were less likely to report feeling pain when they breathed slower. Treadmill training can help Parkinson’s patients to walk more normally, according to a new review of the medical literature.
However, it’s unclear how long the benefits of treadmill training will last, or the best way to deliver this type of training to patients with the movement disorder, Dr. Jan Mehrholz of the Wissenschaftliches Institut in Kreischa, Germany and colleagues note.
In Parkinson’s disease, neurons producing dopamine, an important chemical messenger in the brain, die off, leading to movement problems, tremor and rigidity.
