If your diet is lacking, a basic multivitamin is a good idea, which simply assures that you are getting the recommended daily doses of a number of essential vitamins. Sugary soft drinks and energy drinks are taking it on the chin these days. First, two public-health experts floated the idea of a specific tax on sodas and energy drinks, and now, two other researchers are saying the drinks contribute to obesity and need an extreme makeover.
Walter Willett, who chairs the nutrition department at the Harvard School of Public Health, argues that there is a “direct causal link” between sugar-sweetened soft drinks and energy drinks and obesity, which is in turn linked to heart disease, some types of cancer, arthritis, and type 2 diabetes. Eating a folate-rich diet has been shown to decrease the risk of developing colorectal cancer in women, according to a new study.
Reuters reports that a South Korean study found females who ate the most folate had about a two-thirds lower risk of getting the disease than women who got smaller amounts of the vitamin.
The amount of folate in a man’s diet did not influence the likelihood of developing colorectal cancer, however.
Researchers involved in the study say the findings are significant because they suggest that diet modifications may help cut the risk of disease. Read the rest of this entry »

Indoor tanning fanatics got some disheartening news last week when the International Agency for Research on Cancer moved tanning beds to its highest cancer risk category, calling them “carcinogenic to humans.” That means that there’s now enough evidence showing beyond a doubt that tanning beds can cause skin cancer and should be avoided.
While tanning salons won’t be outlawed, they could eventually have restrictions placed upon them: for example, prohibiting their use in those under 18. Unfortunately, all those warnings may not keep some folks—especially young women—away. Read the rest of this entry »

Drinking alcohol causes around 13 per cent of a range of cancers in women, with the risk increasing from just one glass a day, researchers have found.
Women who drink one small glass of wine a day are increasing their risk of developing certain forms of cancer by six per cent, Oxford University researchers found.
This means that around 7,000 cases of cancer in women in the UK are caused by them drinking just one alcoholic drink a day, the study revealed. Read the rest of this entry »
