Whenever you think of a beautiful face the first thing that comes to your mind is radiant and glowing skin isn’t it? All of us want beautiful skin but forget to follow some simple tips to get healthy skin.

People wonder why they don’t have beautiful skin like their friends. It is easy to believe that beautiful skin is a gift of those costly products which your friend use and which you can’t afford. But you need to get rid of this misconception.

You can not get beautiful skin over night by using some expensive creams. The secret behind glowing skin is a healthy lifestyle. Here are a few tips that will help you to get healthy and radiant skin.

Drink Enough Water:

The first condition for having a beautiful skin is to drink a lot of water. You should drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water per day to keep your skin hydrated and young. Water helps your body to discharge all toxic elements from your body which keeps your healthy.

Eat Healthy Food:

In order to get beautiful skin it is necessary that you avoid those junk foods even if they are very tasty. You don’t need to ignore chocolates forever. Having a chocolate once in a blue moon is fine but don’t make it a habit. Replace those pizzas and pastries with fresh fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables contain minerals, anti oxidants and vitamins needed for your skin. If you are alcoholic or addicted to smoking you need to quit these habits for a healthier lifestyle.

Use Natural Face Care Products:

Yes it is true that some face care products are good for your skin but you should select natural skin care products. Don’t be fooled by the glamorous TV ads because the products shown there contain chemicals harmful for your skin. So never go for cheap products. Natural products may be expensive but they are worth of buying.

Being beautiful on the outside is all about keeping the face young and looking healthy.

We know that the absence of wrinkles and sags, as well as having taut, toned, smooth and glowing skin are the signs of youthful and healthy beauty.

Some go through so much just to maintain the vigor and agelessness of their faces, so much that they would spend a fortune on face lifts and other procedures that would keep them looking as close to 18 years old as possible.

There is, however, an inexpensive way of retaining youthful beauty, and that is through observing a regular facial fitness routine – that is, exercising the muscles of your face. The idea behind facial fitness is similar to the principle of doing a body workout: by exercising, you build up the muscles of your body and keep them toned and firm.
In case of the face, by exercising the facial muscles regularly, the muscles will be lifted enough to remove the sags, and the skin – sunny glow will be smoothened enough to remove the wrinkles. The blood circulation to the face will also increase with facial exercises, enabling the tissues of the face to repair themselves more quickly.

Maintaining a regular facial fitness routine is easy. It only takes a few minutes of your time and it can be done while watching television or waiting for the stoplight to turn green when driving. Here are a few sample exercises for different areas of the face.

Forehead. This will smooth down the wrinkles of the forehead. Place your fingers just above your brow. Then, with your fingers, pull the skin down. At the same time, try to raise your eyebrows. Repeat this ten times.

Eyelids. To deal with crows’ feet at the corners of the eyes, put the thumbs at the corners of the eyes and then shut your eyes tightly. Then, with your thumbs, pull at the skin towards the forehead. Repeat this ten times.

For sagging eyelids, hold your index fingers close to the brow bone. Afterwards, raise your eyebrows. At the same time, try to close your eyes. Again, repeat this ten times.

Cheeks. Form an ‘O’ with your lips and try to push them forward as fast as you can. Then release the ‘O’ and smile as widely as you can. Repeat ten times.

Lips. Push your lips outward in a pout as far as you can, then smile. Or you can suck on your finger as hard as you can. Once again, repeat ten times.

Neck. Arch your neck backward and place your hand on your neck just under the chin. After that, let your hand slide downward and push at your collarbone. An alternative to this one would be to push your lower lip outward as far as you can and tilt your chin up toward the ceiling, resting the hand against the collarbone as you are doing so.

Chin. Push your lower lip upward as high as you can. You can also press your thumb on the bone just under your chin and then push your tongue against your lower gums as if it is trying to meet your thumb. Another thing you can do is to tilt your chin up and massage the flesh under it with your thumb with strokes directed towards your neck. These exercises will take care of the double chin.

Just like in total body workouts, facial fitness exercises take time. However, if you truly want to see results on your face, try doing this once or twice a day, five times a week. You will be able to see changes in around a month or two.

A person’s skin cells, they note, are renewed about every 30 days, and old cells need to be exfoliated.

Shaving helps in this process, the scientists say, by removing dead skin cells in addition to its intended purpose of getting rid of facial hair.

As more men turn to multi-product regimens to help keep their skin looking fresher and younger, advanced shaving gels, skin-conditioning ingredients formulated into shaving creams and new designs in razors themselves are helping give men the added benefits they are demanding.

For instance, Procter & Gamble Co.’s six Gillette Series shave gels introduced earlier this year each deliver a unique benefit to men’s skin.

The line’s moisturizing formula contains glycerin and cocoa butter to nourish skin, while the Gillette Series Cool Cleansing formula contains menthol and eucalyptus oil to provide a cooling sensation that leaves skin feeling refreshed; and the fine’s Protection formula uses almond off to reduce razor drag and prevent irritation.

Improvements in razor technology are also moving the shaving market forward.

The new Azor razor from King of Shaves Co., for example, is said to provide a better shave because it bends.

Think you know what causes your skin to age? You may be surprised. “Wrinkles, under-eye bags, and redness aren’t always caused by sun damage or genetics,” says Mary P. Lupo, MD, a dermatologist in New Orleans.

“I can look at a patient’s face and tell you a lot about her lifestyle—even the products she uses—based on the skin issues she has.” Save yourself a trip to the dermatologist, and read on to find out how you can get a healthier, younger-looking complexion just by tweaking your routine.

1. Bad Habit: Exfoliating with grainy, all-natural scrubs. Natural ingredients are usually healthier than their chemical counterparts.

But when it comes to those grainy facial scrubs, you may want to think twice. “Crushed shells, nuts, or seeds often have jagged edges that can cause microtears in the skin,” Dr. Lupo says.

A better move: Switch to a gentle scrub with beads that are perfectly smooth and round. “They’re less likely to cause irritation,” says David Bank, MD, a dermatologist in Mt. Kisco, New York. If you still have sensitivity, a paste of baking soda and warm water makes an effective exfoliator, Dr. Lupo advises.

Not only is your wardrobe different in the summer but so too is the natural light.

So to help you look great in the warmer whether, here is our guide to wearing make-up in the summer sun…

- Subtle, natural looking make-up is the key to looking good in summer so avoid harsh colours.

- Keep your foundation thin in warmer weather to allow the changing colour of your skin to shine through.

- Neutral colours should be used on your lips rather than bold, dark shades.

- Make use of bronzing powder to give your face and body an extra special glow. Remember to apply your bronzer only where the sun would naturally tan you (i.e. your nose, forehead, cheekbones and a little on the chin).

- Use light coloured make-up to accentuate your tan.

- Waterproof mascara can help keep your lashes looking lush, irrespective of how much you perspire in the summer heat.

- Avoid lip liner as it’s too harsh for the soft summer look.

- Use a softer brown eye liner rather than the traditional black.

First we must determine what is acne. Acne is characterized by small, though sometimes severe skin rashes due to inflammation around fat glands.

The most famous face, upper chest and back of fatty glands secrete sebum, a thick, oily substance that lubricates the skin. Acne develops when sebum flow is blocked by skin cells, dried sebum or bacteria. A complete blockage produces light colored bump (white head), incomplete block leads to a darker color of location (blackhead).

Bacteria normally found on the surface of the skin, it can infect the white head or blackhead, produce pus, and a flare (spot). In severe cases, as is known, cystic acne, painful purple lumps develop. Except in cases which cause widespread skin pustules, cysts or scars, acne is harmless and usually respond to treatment. It is most often during adolescence and can cause significant psychological stress. Eruptions tend to languish on one of 20s, but they may exist. In women, acne first appeared in May in the 20s and 30s. Unexpected outbreaks of acne in older adults may be a sign of more serious fundamental problem.

Prevention There is no evidence that dietary modifications, avoiding fatty foods, chocolate, or will reduce the incidence of acne in those so predisposed, good hygiene can reduce the burden. Picking or squeezing acne lesions may increase the risk of infection and scarring.

• Treatment Regularly washing the face with unscented soap to remove excessive oil is recommended. However, over washing can roily skin as acne worse.

• Present solutions, dry skin, promote peeling and kill bacteria usually improve acne. In Counter preparations most commonly contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. • Several other prescription forms of synthetic vitamin A (Retin A, Diffferin and Tazorac) can be used locally.

• In more severe cases, topical or oral antibiotics such as tetracycline and erythromycin may be prescribed.

• In severe cases resistant to antibiotics, oral vitamin A derivative drug, accutane, may be used. This medicine may harm a fetus so extreme caution should be used to ensure that pregnancy does not occur during treatment. Accutane has other potential side effects, such people should be carefully monitored by a doctor, usually with monthly visits and blood tests.

• Once the acne is completely controlled, scars can be treated with standard or laser surgery or resurfacing procedure called dermabrasion. • And recommend herbs burdock root dandelion leaves, milk thistle, red clover, and are good for acne. Burdock root and red clover are powerful blood cleansers. Milk thistle AIDS liver in cleansing the blood. Good place to start a program, acne herbal cleansing the blood. Both burdock and dandelion to help cleanse the liver.

Liver, which is not the best can be worse acne, because it can not destroy and clear more hormones from the body as it should. Burdock and dandelion also contains inulin, which can improve the quality of the skin by removing bacteria. Eat a high fiber diet and lots of fruit. This is important for keeping the colon clean and ridding the body of toxins.

Increase your intake of raw foods. The more natural raw foods consumed, the faster you clear skin and cure. Are especially raw foods that contain oxalic acid, including almonds, beets, cashews and Swiss chard. Exceptions are spinach and rhubarb, as they contain oxalic acid, but must be consumed in small quantities only.

All prevention and treatment above is incomplete without it. Powerful and effective alternative therapy. Make this part of your anti-acne. . “Germs, bacteria, harmful bacteria and viruses, such as acne, not cause disease and of themselves, the argument is so simple, lack of oxygen, the body is the breeding environment for all diseases. And we must be reminded that for the treatment and prevention acne should handle it inside and not only on the face, but clean and oxygenate for all systems.

A sufficiently oxygenated body uninhabitable by the disease, acne, and ultimately all viruses “can neither survive nor thrive in it. Therefore, the best protection against germs, bacteria, harmful bacteria and viruses is to keep the body oxygenated. Again, let me ask the question “Acne Cure – Is it possible? the answer is a big Yes!

Nobody likes to have adult acne, or even acne for that matter. It’s annoying, painful, and let’s face it (no pun intended!), not very attractive. Treating your acne can seem like an extremely daunting and challenging task. And if you treat your acne incorrectly, it can cause permanent scarring that will be with you for the rest of your life.

With that being said, doing your best to prevent acne in the first place is the easiest way to not have to worry about treating it after the fact. Here are some preventive steps you can take to tone down break outs and even clear up the ones you already have, in a safe and effective way.

Follow this simple 7-step regimen and watch your skin glow in no time.

Step 1: Wash Your Face

Even though some studies will show that hygiene isn’t necessarily connected to acne, it doesn’t take a dermatologist to understand having dust and excess oils on your skin will only clog up pores and lead to break outs. Using a formulated acne cleanser is recommended for this step. If you have normal skin, you will want to wash your face with the cleanser twice a day. If you have dry skin, start with only once a day and be careful not to irritate your skin.

Step 2: Apply Acne Medication

For this step you will want to use acne gel or cream containing benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide kills acne-causing bacteria in the pores and can help dry up excess oil. After washing your face, take a nickel-sized amount and massage the medication lightly into the pores until it is no longer visible.

Also, this isn’t a good time to be popping your pimples. This technique is what causes an acne scar to form. To help protect yourself against permanent scarring, wait as long as you can before removing the puss, or black portion of the pimple.

Step 3: Apply a Moisturizer

Since using cleaners and medication will dry up your skin, it is important to apply moisturizer. If you skip this step, after a week or two (or even sooner depending on your skin type), your face will turn bright red, become sore and start to peel. To prevent this, gently massage the moisturizer in just like you did with the acne medicine in the previous step.

Step 4: Exfoliate

Once a week or so you will want to use an exfoliator to get rid of dead skin cells on your face. An excess of dead skin cells can clog pores, trap bacteria and lead to break outs. Most exfoliators will contain salicylic acid. A dermatologist can prescribe more powerful medication, but salicylic acid should be just fine in most cases.

Step 5: Use a Mask

Once a week you should also apply a facial mask of your liking. Facial masks are great for soothing irritated skin and help promote blood circulation. Masks also help with reddening, soreness, and itching caused by acne.

Step 6: Eat Healthier

Like hygiene, there is no direct evidence that diet causes acne. However, the antioxidants in fruits and vegetables will give your immune system a boost, strengthening your protection against acne-causing bacteria. You should also substitute soda and coffee with water whenever possible.

Step 7: Exercise Regularly

Exercise is good for your body in many ways, including acne treatment. Exercising stimulates the release of serotonin, which will help alleviate stress that could normally lead to acne. Exercise helps the body get rid of waste materials by enhancing metabolic functions.

By following these simple steps, you will be well on your way to controlling your acne. Remember that you can only do so much, as genetics and hormones play the biggest role in acne breakouts. But don’t let nature get the best of you. If these steps don’t work for you, consulting a dermatologist may be a good idea.

Every scar tells a story — and one we mostly prefer to forget. Most scars fade gradually over a period of a year or 18 months, but almost always leave a mark even if it is barely visible.

And one in three scars becomes a permanent, often unsightly, fixture, retaining a hard, raised ridge of uncomfortable tissue.

Some can even continue to grow long after the healing process.

In a world where smooth, youthful skin is highly valued, it’s perhaps hardly surprising that the psychological impact of scars can be deeply distressing, particularly those on the face, neck, chest, arm or hand.

A recent study found that nine out of ten people who’d had a routine surgical procedure within the past six to 12 months were unhappy with their scar.

Seven in ten felt they were ‘more concerned than their surgeon was about the scar’.

It’s only recently that clinicians outside plastic and cosmetic surgery have considered the possibility of managing scarring, and even now, GPs routinely offer little advice beyond

handing out an antibiotic cream to prevent infection, while many surgeons take little interest in what happens after the operation.

‘Surgeons often take pride in doing a great job in the operating theatre, and don’t consider what their patients look and feel like afterwards,’ says Mohammed Jawal, a plastic surgeon at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, West London.

‘For patients, it’s the opposite. They quickly forget about even the most dramatic life-saving operation. What’s important to them is the look and feel of a scar they’ve got to live with for the rest of their lives.’

However, disfiguring scars following surgery could soon be as much part of the past as polio or rickets — with a number of promising new approaches to scar avoidance.

Probably the most exciting is a new drug, Juvista, which is in its final development phase and promises to be the first scar prevention drug on the market.

Made from a naturally occurring human protein known as transforming growth factor, it has been shown to reduce dramatically the risk of scarring when injected into the margins of the wound after surgery.

It works by helping the skin weave back naturally — as if a hole in a pair of tights was magically restored to the pre-tear mesh, rather than having to make do with a disfiguring darn.

The drug is the brainchild of Professor Mark Ferguson, formerly head of the department of Life Sciences at Manchester University, and should be available within three years.

However, it might be available sooner for some. Patients who are undergoing repeat surgery are being recruited for a major international trial of the drug

In the meantime, far more can be done than most of us realise both to prevent abnormal scarring and to treat existing scars. Here, with the help of the experts, we present the latest on scarring old and new.
HOW SCARS FORM

Any wound that penetrates through the superficial layer of skin (the epidermis) and into the lower layer of skin, the dermis, will cause scarring. However, the severity of the scar depends on the success of the skin’s repair response — and, in particular, the behaviour of collagen.

This is the fibre-like protein which acts as glue in the healing of wounds. In normal, healthy skin, the bundles of collagen are in a criss-cross pattern, like basket weaving.

When healing is balanced, the epidermis around the edges of the wound close together with the gluey collagen, staying nice and flat and making the scar into the narrowest possible level surface, explains Gaylene Branstiter, a hand therapist at St Thomas’s Hospital in London.

Even when scarring goes smoothly, there can still be an adjustment phase of up to 18 months as the repair process is completed and the red colour of the scar slowly fades.

WHEN SCARS GO WRONG In a significant number of cases, the repair gets out of hand.

Cells known as fibroblasts — responsible for repairing the hole in the skin — go into overdrive, and a whole new system of blood vessels is set up to feed the scar.

This triggers extra collagen.

Instead of neat criss-cross patterns, bundles of collagen form rigid, parallel lines, sometimes glueing layers of tissue and tendon together, and forming lumps.

Sticky tape, silicone sprays… the first steps to smoother skin

There’s plenty that can be done to improve the look of scars, particularly in the first six months. Some change can be achieved up to 18 months, but after that you’ll need to try invasive treatments.

KINESIOTAPE

This elasticised tape is made from stretchy cotton that sticks to and lifts the skin. Relatively new to the UK, it works by improving the circulation of the blood and lymphatic system, says Gaylene Branstiter. At the same time, ‘pressure from the elasticated tape prevents movement that can pull apart the edges of the top layer of skin.’ This pressure also relieves pain. For cuts a strip of Kinesiotape can be placed along the wound like Elastoplast. Post surgery, the strapping is usually more complex.

SILICONE

In gel, spray or rubber-sheet form, silicone traps moisture to the wound, keeping the scar from becoming rigid. The favourite product with plastic surgeons is Kelocote, a spray or gel that dries to an invisible, breathable sheet within minutes. It’s recommended as the first line of treatment in the initial management of all scars and particularly in the prevention of keloid and hypertrophic scars. Applying it as soon as the wound has healed over will help reduce the risk of abnormal scarring.

CORTISONE TAPE OR CREAM

One of the simplest methods of reducing a red, raised hypertrophic scar is treatment with cortisone, which softens the scar and reduces the activity of the fibroblasts. This is best for scars up to six months old. Cortisone tape (the best-known brand is Haelan) contains slow-releasing cortisone cream. A cheaper option is cortisone cream. ‘It’s a good alternative to more expensive, invasive options,’ says Dr Nick Lowe of the Cranley Clinic in London.

The collagen also overflows onto the skin surface, creating rubbery scars that spread over healthy tissue.

Exactly why this happens with some scars and not others is not fully understood.

But a number of factors affect healing: poor surgical technique, genetic predisposition and, perhaps most importantly, the location of the wound. Scars above moving joints are the most problematic.

There are two main types of ‘unhealthy’ healing.

A hypertrophic scar is formed when the collagen is able to build up on the surface of the wound. The scar remains within the confines of the original injury, but is hard, raised and red, though not usually painful.

Hypertrophic scars are common after all types of operations and even cosmetic procedures if these are not properly managed. The scars improve slowly, fading often over several years, although there is usually a white scar of collagen as a permanent reminder.

A keloid scar is formed when the collagen spills out beyond the original injury, affecting healthy tissue and creating large, lumpy scars that can continue to grow with time. Anyone can get a keloid scar, but they are up to 15 times more common in people with dark skin.

Red-haired, fair-skinned Celts are also prone to them.

Keloid scars are more common in the under-30s, as young skin has a tendency to over-repair.

They are particularly common on the chest, shoulders and back, as well as the ear lobes following piercing.

Other scarring problems include widened scars – where the edges of the wound separate during the healing process, either because the stitches have been taken out too early or because there’s too much movement of the joint, tendon or muscle below the wound.

These are most common on the arms legs and stomach.

INTERNAL SCARS

An adhesion is an internal scar. Some adhesions are formed deep inside the body, and occur when the tissue that’s been operated on develops a scar which literally ‘sticks’ organs to other tissues, leading to pain and further symptoms.

Visible adhesions occur just below the skin surface, causing problems with muscles and tendons. This is most common on the chest, where the scar can connect to the sternum.

However, it’s on the hand that adhesions cause most problems, when the top layer of skin of the scar becomes attached to the muscle or tendon beneath it — causing, for instance, a finger to curl and become rigidly fixed.

PREVENTING SCARS

If you’re worried about scarring, especially where the wound is in a prominent position, mention your concerns to your GP before deciding where to have your operation.

He or she might have inside information about surgeons that can inform your choice.

Before an operation, tell your surgeon that the appearance of the final scar is important to you.

‘Bad cutting is obviously a factor in bad scarring,’ says Mr Javal.

‘If a surgeon is rough cutting through the layers of skin, or cuts more deeply than necessary, the scar is going to be bigger and take longer to heal, both of which are factors in abnormal scarring.’

Any wound should be covered to keep it moist and prevent a scab forming.

‘A scab will create a barrier to healing,’ says Kim Rock Stockheimer, an expert in scars from the University of Wisconsin.

‘The aim is to keep the wound moist and thereby keep the collagen away from the surface of the skin.’ She recommends using a light compressive dressing or pad.

Once the dressing is removed, use a moisturising lotion to hydrate the skin around the scar, says Greg Williams, a burns surgeon at the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital. Moisturised skin improves wound-healing and ensures a balanced release of collagen.

Nor do you need an expensive moisturising cream.

‘Nivea, E45 or baby oil are all good, as long as you’re not allergic to them,’ says Mr Williams.

Gently massaging the scar for 30 seconds to a minute several times a day , from the moment the wound has healed over, will ‘break up the scar’, says Branstiter.

‘To keep the collagen from becoming lumpy, you need to make sure the fluid in the skin is moving around. Massage the whole area with lotion in a circular motion.’

LASERS HELP OLD WOUNDS

Older scars may respond better to more invasive treatments. One option is pulsed dye lasers.

These were invented initially to treat red birthmarks on babies, and work by targeting the blood vessels that feed raised red scars.

However, the treatment is only available privately and is expensive — £100 for a single treatment on a small area — and several treatments are usually required.

It works best in scars under 18 months old.

Surgical removal is often the only way forward for large, old scars, usually from an accident or botched operation in childhood.

Ask your GP whether you are eligible for scar revision on the NHS, or to recommend a private plastic surgeon.
