According to a study published in the journal Evolutionary Anthropology, scientists used ancient human teeth to discover that stress that was brought on earlier on in their life may have led to their early death.

Because teeth can serve as evidence of what kind of events take place throughout human development by studying the chronology of enamel development, researchers were able to notice individuals who experienced stress in the womb or during their early childhood had a shorter lifespan.

Researchers believe it was the stress of living conditions in earlier times may have resulted in individuals’ early demises. However, it should also be noted that deadly diseases were much more prevalent during this period.

“During prehistory, the stresses of infectious disease, poor nutrition and psychological trauma were likely extreme,” said researcher George Armelagos. “The teeth show the impact.”

It is a common issue…we want our kids to spend their non-school time wisely, but they often watch more TV than then we would prefer. In spite of activities to structure their time we have to look at other ways to keep kids busy so they are not caught in the TV trap.

Parents are wise to limit kid’s TV watching to a couple of hours each day. It’s a difficult limit to stick to, but if parents can establish this habit early on, it’s easier. Selective TV watching prevents children (and adults) from turning into couch potatoes with withered brain cells.

Many parents turn to activities to keep their kids busy. They often live in their cars and have forgotten what their spouse looks like. Parents fall into the over-scheduling trap for variety of reasons. The first motive is the healthiest and the last is the most damaging:

Parents want their children to use their time wisely, but accidentally take on too much.

Children want to do everything. Parents don’t want to disappoint them or hear endless nagging, so they let them.

Parents keep children busy so they won’t get into trouble, instead of teaching children how to make planned responsible decisions to be “good” children.

Some parents want their children to experience every opportunity — all at once, which is overwhelming.

Now and then, parents expect their children to be super-achievers, whatever the cost.

To determine whether your family’s schedule needs to be scaled back, ask, “Does my child want to do all these activities or do I want them to?” When parents register children for activities without asking children first, it’s a huge red flag that parents need to back off. If children want to do everything, think “moderation” and remember that responsible parents do not give children everything they want.

The reality is that when anyone adds too many kettles to the fire, they are bound to get burned out. Over-scheduling often affects children’s schoolwork, quality family time and increases the stress levels of the children and parents involved. The long term result of over-scheduling is a generation of stressed-out workaholics who don’t know how to set priorities, say “no,” focus on one task, and have balance in their lives. What? WE are part of a generation of stressed-out workaholics?

Then we need to break the cycle. Children need “down time” as much as adults do. They need time to play and just be a kid — even teens. Will they get bored? Probably. But they need to learn how to use their imaginations to handle boredom creatively and responsibly.

To regain control of your family life and reduce scheduling stress, establish a policy of two activities per season. Have children rotate seasonal activities or reach one goal, then strive for another. Also, families need time together when they aren’t eating, driving or discussing schedules and life-changing issues. Weekly family time is one activity worth scheduling.

Setting limits on activities teaches children important skills and values that benefit them as adults. They learn how to budget their time and responsibilities and to handle disappointment. These children know how to set priorities and concentrate on doing their best at a few chosen activities. Rarely are activities “once in a lifetime” opportunities. Usually, there is a time and season for every activity. We and our children just need to pace ourselves, instead of racing to do everything all at once.

Of three top ways in which you can make life better – decreasing stress, reducing pain and sleeping better – exercise helps you do all three. When you are ready to improve the quality of your life and make exercise plans, you’ll want to form a daily exercise routine. How? Remember that an exercise lifestyle is lived one moment at a time and that quality of life is revealed by each choice you make in each moment.

Simply know this: Your thoughts and feelings support your actions, your actions support your steps, your steps support your behavior and your repeated behavior becomes your lifestyle.

Take a look at how the small choices lead to a lifestyle:

Become aware of emotions you associate with the experience of exercise. Tune into your well-being and joy when you are active. Choosing to be active is much easier when your mind says, “This is fun!” or “This feels good!”

Visualize walking around the block to get your mail and playing with your kids or grandkids. Let those thoughts inspire creativity, so you begin to make other feel-good exercise plans.

Live in the present, which is the only “place” where you can be active. Actions happen now, not in the past or future. In-the-moment opportunities, such as walking up the ramp at the mall instead of taking the escalator, riding a bike instead of driving or taking a walk on your lunch break instead of gobbling fast food, provide ways for you to fit in fitness and should be part of your daily exercise routine.

Create your belief system, make your choices and take a step. After experiencing the endorphin release caused by physical activity that can reduce pain, believe that exercise can make you feel better and make exercise plans. Choose to be active over being still. Accumulated in-the-moment choices are the actions that become the steps that establish a lifestyle.

Cultivate and engage. Each day we engage in activities that care for our body, such as taking a shower, eating, sleeping and brushing our teeth. These actions have become a lifestyle and, more than likely, there are aspects of each one that you enjoy while you are engaged in it. The same can be said for exercise. As you cultivate a relationship with exercise, you create and live an exercise lifestyle, and your actions – and life – become extremely rewarding and enjoyable.

We all need to stress less and relax more. However, with the hectic lives most of us lead today, this is easier said than done.

Nevertheless, there are steps you can take to help you reach a calmer state of mind…

Breathe
Taking a couple of minutes out of your day to practice a deep breathing can have tremendous effect on your stress levels. If you want to take things a stage further you could try meditation to really calm the body and the mind.

Stay off the coffee
Don’t be tempted to combat stress with a caffeine fix. It may give you a short term high but it will ultimately make you feel even more stressed. To relax you need to sooth the body. The stimulants in coffee certainly wont do this.

Talk Talk
A problem shared. It’s good to talk. These may be cliches but that doesn’t make them any less true. Talking to your partner or a close friend about your stress will be like releasing a pressure valve. And of course they can often provide invaluable help and advice.

Take a bath
It may seem simple, but taking a bath is constantly voted by women as the best way to destress and relax the body and mind. Twenty minutes of hot water, soothing bath salts, flickering candles, gentle music and maybe even a glass of wine – it really doesn’t get any better than this.

STRESS!!!! Unfortunately, we all have to deal with it. Family problems, health issues, the economy, work, financial stuggles and on and on….

…And science tells us that the way we handle life’s problems can have alot to do with our level of health. That’s why it’s so critical that we learn how to handle problems as well as we possibly can.

So here are a few drug-free ways to reduce the pressures of daily living:

Natural Stress Busters:

• LEARN TO SAY “NO”: In other words don’t “bite off more than you can chew”. Learn your limitations and don’t commit to more than you can physically or mentally handle.

• START A REGULAR EXERCISE PROGRAM: This is a great way to release tension and it has many other health benefits. Even something as simple as a regular walking routine can do the trick. Just don’t overdue it whatever you decide to take up and always warm-up before doing any vigourous exercise to avoid injury. (ALWAYS CONSULT A LICENSED PHYSICAN BEFORE STARTING ANY EXERCISE PROGRAM.)

• DON”T SPEND MORE MONEY THAN YOU MAKE: More and more Americans fall into debt every day. This can really take a toll on your peace of mind and your nerves. Ask yourself a question before you buy something: DO I REALLY NEED THIS? Also, if you are in serious debt, there are different organizations that can help you consolidate it so you can get your life back. Look into your options.

• DON’T PROCRASTINATE: Always waiting to the last minute to do something you could have done at an earlier time just causes unnessesary stress and tension that you don’t need in your life.

• GET A PET: Studies have shown that pets can have a calming influence on their owners and help relieve stress. (IMPORTANT NOTE: You should only get a pet if you KNOW you can properly take care of it and give it the loving attention and care it deserves.) If you have the right circumstances, there are many lonely cats and dogs looking for good homes. Check with your nearest shelter.

• TAKE UP A HOBBY: You might want to learn to play a musical instrument or take up painting or even start playing tennis. Whatever you think you would enjoy, just give it a try. This could really help take your mind of your problems and help you relax occassionally.

• HAVE A LAZY DAY: Sometimes you just need to take a day off and just relax . Maybe sleep late, go to the beach, read a good book, go see a movie or whatever you feel like doing. You deserve it once and awhile, especially if you’re a workaholic. Everything in moderation.

• AVOID NEGATIVE PEOPLE WHEN POSSIBLE: When you can, try to associate with people who have a positive outlook on life and avoid negative people who bring you down and wear you out.

• PERFORM A RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS: You’ve probably heard the Biblical expression: “There is more happiness in giving then there is in receiving.” Science backs this saying up.

When you do things for others, it causes a positive chemical reaction in your body that lifts your “spirits” and just makes you feel good about yourself. This helps relieve some of the tension in your life and gives you a chance to forget about your problems for awhile. Your kind act could also really help someone else have a better day.

• GIVE YOURSELF SOME QUIET TIME: Try to take some time each day to relax in a quiet spot somewhere. (It could be in your bedroom or at a park or a sandy beach) Even if it’s just for 15 minutes a day to gather your thoughts. You might want to try some visualization techniques. Some find it relaxing to visualize themselves doing something they enjoy or visualizing a time in their life when they were really happy. The more emotion you put into it, the better you will feel. Your mind will begin to actually think it’s a reality and not just your imagination. This is a simple but very powerful technique.

If you want more visualizing techniques, go to your local bookstore and buy a book that explains it more thoroughly.

• SMILE MORE: It has been shown that just the act of smiling can have a positive effect on your body chemistry. It releases certain chemicals in your body that relieve tension and reduce stess.

• AVOID PERFECTIONISM: You should always take pride in everything you do. However, don’t expect more from yourself and from others beyond a resoanable point. Do the best you can and move on to other things that need to get done.

• LAUGHTER TRULY IS THE BEST MEDICINE: Try to bring more laughter in your life. Hang around with friends that make you laugh or watch a good sit-com to reduce stress and release some pent-up tension you may have. Scientific studies have shown that laughter adds years to your life. Laugh as much as you can.

• TAKE A NATURAL B VITAMIN COMPLEX SUPPLEMENT: When you are under alot of stress it depletes your body of B vitamins. It’s important to replace these important nutrients.

• GET A PROFESSIONAL MASSAGE: Very few things can help you relax like a nice professional massage. If you are overstressed, you may want to give it a try.

• MAKE SURE YOU GET PLENTY OF SLEEP: Everyone handles life’s challenges much better when they are not overtired. Don’t stay up too late watching the late, late, late show.

TAKE A NICE RELAXING VACATION: All work and no play makes for a very stressful life. Plan a trip to somewhere nice that you’ve always wanted to go. Take it easy for a while. You deserve it.

Applying a few of these tecnniques can really help you reduce the level of stress in your life and could also help you to improve your general well-being. Don’t underestimate the effect your emotions have on your overall health. Even though we all face stress daily, we can learn to cope with it better.

When that chemistry changes because of improper diet, improper exercise or stress, toxins form in the body and the skin throws them out as acne, boils, eczema, psoriasis, rashes, or other kinds of eruptions.

Vibrant healthy skin has a youthful glow, good coloring, and a smooth, unblemished look. However, unhealthy skin can look shallow, tired, wrinkled, and older than its actual age. No one wants unhealthy skin, but since so many people fail to understand its causes far too many people are suffering from it.

According to a leading Ayurvedic practitioner, the type of toxic skin manifestations will depend upon each person’s constitution. In general, skin disorders fall into six categories:

Disorders of the sebaceous glands – which include seborrhea, which is a Vata or Pitta imbalance, and blackheads, whiteheads, cystic acne, sebaceous cysts and excessive oiliness, which are Kapha imbalances.

Disorders of the sweat glands include excessive sweat, prickly heat, and red rash, which are Pitta problems; lack of sweat, which is a Vata problem; and abnormal foul-smelling perspiration, which is an imbalance of all three doshas.

Pigmentation problems include blackish discolorations (Vata); brown or reddish discolorations (Pitta); and whitish pigmentation (Kapha).

Skin allergies include psoriasis (Vata), dermatitis (Pitta), and eczema (Vata, Pitta, or Kapha).

Infections (fungal, bacterial, or viral) are due to low immunity (depleted ojas) and occur in all skin types.

Changes in tissue growth, which include dandruff (Vata or Pitta); moles, acne rosacea, and birthmarks (all Pitta imbalances); and cysts and tumors, which are Kapha imbalances.

As you can see, there are numerous explanations for unhealthy skin but the main causes tend to be an unhealthy diet, an ineffectual cleansing routine, and poor lifestyle choices.

Poor Diet
Your skin is a living, breathing organ of the body and it needs proper nourishment and hydration to look and feel its best. When your skin is deprived of the necessary vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that it needs it is unable to functional at optimal levels and the structure slowly begins to break down. This breakdown results in dry skin, blemishes, discoloration, wrinkles, and premature ageing.

In order to avoid this breakdown you need to feed your skin a varied mix of important nutrients each day. Ingesting sufficient amounts of vitamin A, a nutrient that can be found in citrus fruits and orange vegetables, can help you avoid dry skin and blemishes. Eating foods rich in the vitamin B group like brewer’s yeast or breads, or taking a vitamin B group supplement, can help you ward of skin discoloration, dry skin, dermatitis, shallow skin, and premature ageing.

To help discourage wrinkles, pale skin, sun damage, blemishes, and other unhealthy skin symptoms, nutrients like calcium, protein, iodine, niacin, folic acid, iron, and copper are very important to a healthy diet. Get these effective skin helpers by enjoying foods like mild, eggs, cheese, chicken, fish, leafy vegetables, fruits, and grains.

Poor Hygiene
Another common cause of unhealthy skin is poor hygiene. Whether this involves the failure to clean your skin often enough or the use of an ineffective cleansing routine, built-up dirt and grime can lead to blemishes, premature ageing, shallowness, dry skin, and wrinkles.

When your skin is not properly cleaned on a regular basis, dirt, pollution and other harmful substances are allowed to build up on your skin and clog the pores. Clogged pores result in breakouts, dry skin, and the reduction of cell renewal.

To get the most out of your cleansing routine make sure that you wash your skin twice a day, everyday. Also, make sure that you are using an effective cleanser like a soap that is specially formulated for deep cleansing. Make sure that you use gentle pressure when cleaning the skin, do not scrub or pull on the skin since this can result in tiny tears that are susceptible to irritation and infection. Finally, always follow your cleansing routine with a hydrating moisturizer that also contains a sunscreen in order to hydrate your skin and protect it from sun damage.

Bad Lifestyle Habits
Even if you enjoy a healthy diet and pay special attention to your skin care regime you can still be sabotaging the health of your skin by indulging in unhealthy habits. Habits like sun tanning, smoking, choosing fizzy drinks or sodas over water, and wearing heavy makeup can lead to the development of unhealthy skin. Avoid excessive sun exposure, always wear sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 15, stop smoking and avoid those who smoke, drink plenty of water, and choose light cosmetics if you want your skin to stay young and healthy looking for years to come.

If you suffer from any type of facial malady, most experts will agree, the first rule of skin care is: cleanse, nourish, and moisturize. No matter what type of skin you have, this three-step routine for the care of your skin is essential to counteract the daily effects of environment, stress, and the skin’s natural process of cell degeneration. It is the very minimum you must do to maintain a normal, healthy, youthful complexion. Even if you do nothing else for an existing skin problem, keeping this regimen every day can help to improve your condition, sometimes in a short amount of time.

The basic requirements for good skin include daily cleansing, nourishing, and moisturizing that is right for your complexion type. A total facial beauty program should feature daily skincare: cleansing, toning, moisturizing, weekly facial masks, healthy eating, rejuvenating body baths, exfoliation, and of course, exercise.

Following a seasonal skin care regimen is ideal for everyone, no matter what your skin condition, as our skin fluctuates with the seasons. In winter, cold temperatures and lack of humidity make moisturizing a must. In the heat of the summer months, the humidity is higher and you are more prone to exercise and sweat, so a moisturizer may not be necessary, but a sunscreen will – then you may notice more breakouts and need a detoxifying clay mask for example.

The most common skincare complaints include acne, eczema, psoriasis, premature wrinkles, sagging and age spots. Not all of these skin maladies will occur at the same time and not all skincare products will be necessary at all times. If you have combination skin, you may even need to ‘spot-treat’ – a moisturizer on your cheeks and a detoxifying mask on your forehead and nose, for example.

If you are a resourceful natural skincare advocate, you may already make some of your best skincare products at home. If you prefer to buy your skin care products rather than make them, it will benefit you greatly to be a knowledgeable consumer. Learn to distinguish the true natural products from the many pretenders on the market today.

Typically most skincare treatments are external. While they are vital to achieving a flawless complexion and an all-over healthy appearance, they alone are not sufficient to eliminate all skin problems completely. A topical product will alleviate only the surface issues of disease and aging, not the cause itself. For that you must also cleanse and nourish the body and mind internally – where all disorders begin. Internal skincare is equally if not more important that any external cream, especially when it comes to diet and key stress-reducing techniques like exercise, meditation and massage.

You can take years off your appearance by rejuvenating your skin if you are willing to follow a “whole-health” regimen. Make a routine of your daily skincare with proper cleansing, nourishing / toning and moisturizing as well as feeding your body nourishing, healthy foods and exercising. You will see the results for yourself through your improved complexion and an overall feeling of well-being.

The superoxide dismutase enzyme supplement (SOD) derived from the fruit decreased the signs and symptoms of perceived stress and fatigue in healthy volunteers.

“The 35 people in our study who received capsules containing superoxide dismutase showed improvement in several signs and symptoms of perceived stress and fatigue,” says Marie-Ann Milesi, a researcher involved in the study.

Milesi admits that researchers found a strong placebo effect in volunteers who did not receive the supplement, but notes that that this can be expected when studying subjective feelings such as stress.

She says the improvements seen in the volunteers who took the supplement were significantly greater after 28 days.

Dietary antioxidants have been touted as potential treatments for cancer, atherosclerosis, chronic inflammatory disease and aging. Besides SOD, other popular antioxidants are selenium, vitamin C and E, and zinc.

In addition to nutritional supplements, antioxidants are found in berries, beans, spices such as cloves, cinnamon and oregano, and even potatoes.
